Government plans to charge for Notting Hill Carnival

Notting Hill Carnival is set to make a major change next year.Time Out reports that the world-famous Notting Hill carnival could be a ticketed event in the not too distant future. This  would mean carnivalgoers will have to pay to attend for the first time in its 49-years.

The proposal has been submitted by Conservative MP for Kensington, Victoria Borwick, who has also suggested moving it to the Saturday and Sunday, rather than the current Sunday and Monday, to reduce police overtime costs.

The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe and originated in 1964 as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their own cultures and traditions. Taking place every August Bank Holiday weekend in the streets of London W11, the Notting Hill Carnival is an amazing array of sounds, colourful sights and social solidarity. I for one am horrified at this prospect I have been attending Notting Hill Carnival for years and I think it was something that brought people together to feel and celebrate free for free, and is now being exploited
